Executive Summary
This document explains why Artisan Furniture cannot supply stains, lacquers, thinners, replacement doors, drawers, tops, cushions, or upholstery components. It covers the chemical, regulatory, technical, structural, and craftsmanship-based constraints governing handcrafted solid wood furniture. It also clarifies why only small non-structural accessories (knobs, hinges, screws, skid pads) qualify as feasible replacement items. Additionally, the document outlines our Soft Knockdown system, our patented KD mechanism, and why CKD/SKD modular parts cannot be provided. Finally, it explains the climate dependency of bespoke stains, the hazards of chemical shipping, and the construction tolerances that make parts non-interchangeable.
Understanding Finishing Materials, Component Limitations & Replacement Part Constraints in Handcrafted Furniture
1. BESPOKE STAINS & LACQUERS: WHY THEY CANNOT BE SUPPLIED
1.1 Formulations Created for a Specific Climate and Factory Environment
All stains and finishes used in our production are bespoke mixtures developed using professional-grade stain concentrates, NC lacquer, thinners, and additives. These blends are specifically calibrated for Jaipur’s temperature, humidity, and airflow conditions, and applied with industrial finishing equipment. They are not commercially available retail products.
1.2 Finish Outcomes Depend on Multiple Variables
The final colour tone depends on wood density, sanding progression, spray pressure, nozzle size, drying intervals, and climate. Even with the exact formula, a finish produced in a different climate or workshop will not match our shade.
1.3 Applies to All Finishes
This applies to all stained, painted, washed, acid-wash, natural, medium, dark, and specialised finishes. Finishing results from method + formulation + climate.
2. WHY STAINS, LACQUERS, AND THINNERS CANNOT BE SHIPPED
2.1 Classified as Hazardous Chemicals
Stains, lacquers, and thinners fall under hazardous chemical classifications such as UN 1263 (Paint), UN 1139 (Coating Solutions), and UN 1993 (Flammable Liquids, NOS). Transport requires DG-certified packaging, carriers, and documentation.
2.2 Export Licence Limitations
Our export license covers finished furniture only. We are not legally authorised to ship hazardous chemicals such as stain, lacquer, thinner, or solvents. Courier companies and airlines will reject these because they require a dangerous goods license.
2.3 Regulatory Risk
Shipping these items without proper DG certification may lead to shipment seizure, fines, penalties, and revocation of export privileges.
3. PRACTICAL TOUCH-UP OPTIONS FOR MINOR SURFACE MARKS
Minor scratches may be camouflaged using wax sticks, touch-up pencils, or blending markers available commercially. For major repairs, professional local refinishing is the only viable solution.
4. REPLACEMENT PARTS CONSTRAINTS
Handcrafted furniture is structurally non-modular; components are custom-fitted to each piece individually.
4.1 Doors
Every door is aligned, sanded, and fitted to its specific cabinet. Hinge placement, reveal tolerances, and grain alignment vary per unit. Replacement doors cannot fit another cabinet.
4.2 Drawers
Drawers are constructed after the body is built. Internal measurements, manual sanding, runner calibration, and our safety back-lock mechanism ensure each drawer is unique. Replacement drawers cannot operate correctly in another structure.
4.3 Tops
Console and cabinet tops are sanded flush and lacquer-finished as part of the entire unit. Replacement tops will not match colour, tone, grain, or tolerances.
4.4 Upholstery Components
Fabric dye lots differ between batches. Cushion replacement is not feasible because shades will not match. Upholstery is patterned, stitched, tensioned, and tufted on the frame during assembly, making standalone replication impossible.
5. KNOCKDOWN SYSTEMS: WHAT WE OFFER AND WHY
5.1 We Do Not Offer CKD or SKD Furniture
CKD/SKD systems require machine-made modularity and uniform tolerances, incompatible with handcrafted production.
5.2 We Offer Soft Knockdown Only
We supply only removable legs using our patented knockdown mechanism. This improves volumetric efficiency, reduces carbon footprint, and preserves structural integrity.
5.3 Why Other Components Cannot Be Supplied
Only legs are designed for soft knockdown. Doors, drawers, tops, and upholstery parts cannot be produced or shipped as standalone replacements.
6. THE ONLY REPLACEMENT PARTS THAT ARE FEASIBLE
- Knobs and handlesÂ
- Hinges
- Screws and fasteners
- Skid padsÂ
- Legs
These are non-structural accessories and interchangeable.
6.1 Replacement Legs Policy
Under our replacement parts program, we can also offer replacement legs, provided they are in a knockdown (detachable) state from the main body of the furniture. Approximately 95% of our furniture falls within this category.
If the issue is due to a manufacturing defect or transit damage attributable to us, we will arrange a replacement and ship the replacement part free of charge.
If the damage is not attributable to us, or if the request falls outside the applicable return or replacement timelines, replacement legs can still be purchased separately. In such cases, you may visit the relevant product page and order the appropriate legs for your item (Search: Leg)
7. CLOSING NOTE
Handcrafted solid wood furniture is defined by individuality and artisanal tolerances. Replacement structural or finished components cannot be supplied because the furniture is not modular and not manufactured through industrial panel systems. These limitations reflect the authenticity and natural behaviour of solid wood craftsmanship.
