Declaration for treated timber / finished furniture

Business
Product

Safety Data Sheet is provided in reference to the treatment process applied to wooden furniture manufactured by a SMETA-audited, GMP-compliant factory in Jaipur, India for the British brand Artisan Furniture. Artisan Furniture does not sell or distribute the active chemical substances (Bifenthrin or Low Aromatic White Spirit) as standalone products. These materials are only used internally as part of a wood pre-treatment process to protect against wood-boring insects and termites.

After treatment, all timber is further finished and sealed with clear lacquer, sealer, and wax coating, creating a sealed surface layer that eliminates or significantly limits any end-user exposure to the treatment chemicals.

The treated article being exported is finished wooden furniture manufactured in India, not a biocidal product. All treatments are fully cured and sealed before packaging and shipment.

Regulatory Clarification on Bifenthrin Usage

The active substance Bifenthrin, used as part of the internal pre-treatment process in the Jaipur manufacturing facility, is applied exclusively to raw timber during production. It is then fully sealed with lacquer, sealer, or wax prior to export.

While Bifenthrin is restricted for agricultural crop protection within the European Union and UnitedKingdom, these restrictions do not apply to its controlled use in industrial wood preservation and timber treatment carried out at the manufacturing stage.

The finished article placed on the market is furniture, not a biocidal product. As such, it falls under the “treated article” provisions of the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012 and corresponding UK BPR regime.

Under this regime, the end buyer is not purchasing a chemical but a sealed, fully finished wooden article with negligible user exposure. The active substance is used solely for manufacturing protection and not for any pesticidal or biocidal claims in the retail market.

All treatments are performed at an SMETA-audited, GMP-compliant factory in Jaipur, India, with full SDS documentation, batch logs, and compliance records available upon request.

This statement is made to clarify that the restrictions applicable to agricultural crop use of Bifenthrindo do not extend to its permitted use in wood preservation for export furniture manufacturing.
