1. Universal Packaging Standard
All Artisan Furniture products are packaged at source in Jaipur, India, our community-driven and Forbes-featured factory. This ensures consistency, quality, and compliance across our entire supply chain.
The same Packaging 3.0 Standard is applied for:

This packaging system is universal, designed to withstand long-haul sea freight, multiple handling stages, and last-mile delivery β ensuring your order arrives securely anywhere in the world, including domestic India.
2. Packaging Components
Interlocks
- Interlocks applied on doors and drawers.
- Protection added to knobs where required.
Wrapping
- Entire product wrapped in thick craft paper for abrasion resistance.
High-Density Corners
- Applied on every edge of the product.
- Provides safety and structural integrity as part of drop test compliance.
Thermocol & Corrugation
- Thermocol corners with an added corrugated sheet layer.
- Additional thermocol blocks placed every 10β12 inches around edges.
- A top thermocol block applied for further protection.
Strong Cardboard Support
- Reinforced cardboard applied along every edge.
- Maintains packaging structure and protects corners during impact.
3. Packaging & Compliance
Our packaging is designed to balance protection and sustainability. More than 95% of the materials used β corrugated cardboard, paper, and fillers β are recyclable. Around 5% consists of expanded polystyrene(EPS) corner protectors, which provide critical impact resistance for safe delivery. While EPS is not biodegradable, it is compliant with EU/UK REACH chemical safety requirements and the EU Packaging Waste Directive / Australian Packaging Covenant rules. It contains no intentionally added PFAS, phthalates, flame retardants, or heavy metals. We are actively trialing recyclable alternatives such as molded pulp and honeycomb board to further reduce non-recyclable content.
4. Fragile Product Protocol
- Fragile items (e.g., mirror frames, bone inlay, glass) are double-boxed.
- Extra thermocol padding applied directly to fragile areas.
5. Drop Test & Mail Order Compliance
- All products undergo a drop test to confirm compliance with global mail-order standards.
- Products are placed on a platform with secure interlocking β ensuring any drop impact hits the protective outer box first.
6. ISTA-1A & ISTA-C Certified Transit Packaging
- Our packaging systems are rigorously engineered and tested in accordance with ISTA standards. We confirm that our packaging is fully compliant and certified to both ISTA-1A and ISTA-C protocols, ensuring reliable performance under controlled testing and real-world distribution conditions. These certifications validate that our packaging design is built to withstand standard handling, storage, and transportation environments while maintaining product protection, stability, and structural integrity throughout the supply chain.
- Under ISTA-1A and ISTA-C certification, our packaging is tested against real-world distribution stresses including vibration simulation during road and ocean transit, multi-orientation drop testing, impact and shock resistance, compression and stacking load performance, and handling simulations that replicate warehouse and courier movement. These evaluations ensure the packaging maintains strength under load, protects edges and surfaces, absorbs transit shocks,and minimizes damage risks across long-distance shipments, multiple handling touchpoints,and final-mile delivery conditions.
6. Box Specifications
- Products are packed in 7-ply strong corrugated cartons.
- Final stage includes taping, strapping, and labelling.
- Heavier items are placed in higher-density corrugated boxes.
7. Hardware & Knock-Down Products
Hardware for Soft Assembly
- Hardware placed in a sealed plastic bag, wrapped in Styrofoam.
- A red ribbon marker is attached for easy identification.
Knock-Down Products
- Legs wrapped in thick craft paper and Styrofoam on the feet.
- Packed in a separate box within the master carton.
8. Labelling Standards
To support our global footprint and comply with local market regulations, we provide market-specific labelling:
- United Kingdom, United States, Australia: Labels in English only.
- Canada: Bilingual labels in English and French, complying with Canadian standards.
- European Union (Germany hub): Dual labelling in English and German, meeting EU and German packaging laws.
- European Union (Spain hub): Dual labelling in English and Spanish, meeting EU and Spanish packaging laws.
All labels include handling instructions, SKU identifiers, barcodes, and safety symbols where required.

1. Why Packaging Matters
Solid wood furniture is heavy, rigid, and unforgiving of rough handling. Packaging has to do two jobs at once: protect a valuable, handmade product across long-distance freight and last-mile delivery, and do it without contradicting the sustainability principles the product itself is built on. A piece that arrives damaged has failed the customer. A piece that arrives safely inside packaging bound for landfill has failed everything else we stand for.
We have rebuilt our pack-out around one rule: use paper and plant fibre wherever they can do the job, certify what we source, and be direct about the one component we have not replaced yet. That is what this document sets out β every layer, every material, and exactly where we still have work to do.
2. Our Packaging Philosophy
Four commitments drive every packaging decision we make:
- Every sheet of paper and board we use β the kraft wrap, the corner overwrap, the L-corners, the cartons, the labels β is FSC-certified.
- We use no wood-based packaging materials anywhere in our pack-out.
- Our new corner protector is built from moulded kraft paper, held together by a natural binder extracted from maize (corn) starch β not a synthetic resin, not a petroleum adhesive. It replaces polystyrene foam completely, is 100% biodegradable, and is the subject of a British patent application.
- Wholesale and bulk shipments are floor-loaded by hand, directly into the container. We use no pallets, no stretch wrap, and no strapping, at any stage.
3. Packaging Components, Layer by Layer
Packaging falls into four functional tiers: primary packaging touches the product directly; secondary packaging groups and cushions it; shipment packaging is the outer unit for individual delivery; tertiary packaging carries it in bulk. The table below places every layer we use against these four tiers.

Our outer carton does double duty: it is the shipment unit for individual delivery, and in a larger case format, the tertiary unit for bulk transport. Bulk consignments are floor-loaded by hand directly into the container rather than palletised, so pallets, stretch wrap and strapping play no part in our packaging system.

The breakdown below covers packaging format, material composition, coatings, laminates, adhesives, labels, inks, closures, separable components, and anything else relevant to recyclability β for every component named in Section 3.

5. Regulatory Direction of Travel
Packaging regulation is tightening everywhere. The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is the clearest, most detailed framework currently in force, so we use its timeline as our benchmark. Its pattern β documentation and conformity first, then compostability, then full recyclability and recycled-content rules β is the direction every major market is likely to follow in some form. We are building our packaging system against that standard everywhere we ship, not only where it is currently mandatory.

6. Where We Still Have Work to Do
Six of our eight packaging components are already FSC-certified, biodegradable and recyclable. Two are not there yet β and they are not in the same position.
- Sealing tape is a plastic film with a petroleum-based adhesive. It is not recyclable in standard paper streams and not biodegradable. It is the only material anywhere in our primary, secondary, shipment or tertiary packaging with no plant-based or paper-based alternative in use today, and it is the one open item on this document.
- Our EPS corner protector is not biodegradable and is recyclable only through specialist schemes that are rarely available. Unlike the tape, this material already has a finished replacement: a moulded kraft paper corner block bound with a natural maize-starch adhesive, fully biodegradable, with a British patent filed. It is being rolled out to fully retire EPS from our packaging.
No wood-based or non-certified paper material appears anywhere in our packaging, and no pallets, stretch wrap or strapping are used at any stage. Once sealing tape is resolved, alongside the maize-starch corner protector already in motion, our entire packaging system will be plastic-free, fully recyclable, and predominantly compostable β ahead of the 2028 and 2030 milestones set out above.
